Chapter Nine

Dinner was superb. Audrey made a mental note to thank Mary and Julie for all their hard work. She had employed the two girls as she had wanted something special and Alice, her own cook, lacked imagination. Mary and Julie, however, were quickly gaining a well-deserved reputation for their catering skills. They were exceptionally pleasing on the eye, too. Audrey had noticed Lloyd’s gaze wander longingly on more than one occasion. Both girls wore casual clothes to prepare and cook the food but the transformation when they served it was amazing. They looked delightful in their short black dresses, tiny white aprons and high heels. She would have to recommend the girls to Olivia. Their fees were a bit steep, and getting steeper by the week, but the end result was well worth it.

She suspected Lloyd had been a little annoyed to discover that he wasn’t dining, as he had clearly expected to, with her and Tony but, of course, he was far too polite to say so. She also suspected that the sight of her pretty caterers had helped him to forget his annoyance.

‘Let’s have our coffee in the sitting room,’ she suggested. ‘It’s cosier in there. Besides, you haven’t seen my new lighting system.’

‘No, but I heard all about it from Olivia.’

‘Did you? And what else did she tell you?’ Audrey asked.

‘Stop fishing for compliments, Audrey,’ Lloyd retorted with a smile. ‘She was very impressed, as I’m sure she told you herself.’

Audrey laughed off his words, pleased but not in the least surprised that Olivia hadn’t mentioned what had taken place beneath those lights.

Lloyd was, or pretended to be, impressed with her lighting, too. She bathed the room in a warm, pink glow.

Mary brought their coffee and, again, Audrey saw that Lloyd’s gaze was irresistibly drawn to the girl’s high hemline and long, slender legs.

‘She’s gorgeous, isn’t she?’ Audrey remarked when Mary had left them alone.

‘Yes, she is. So are you, Audrey.’ He made himself comfortable on the sofa while Audrey poured their coffee. ‘Don’t think I haven’t noticed the way you’ve been flaunting yourself all evening.’

‘Flaunting myself?’ If that remark had come from anyone but Lloyd, she would have been highly offended – and furious. ‘I have not!’ She handed him his coffee. ‘Although I have to confess,’ she added quietly, ‘that I do miss you, Lloyd.’

‘I miss you, too,’ he said, but Audrey guessed he was lying. ‘I explained things to you –’

‘You said you were going to be faithful to Livvy,’ she scoffed. ‘And if you think I believe that, Lloyd Standish, you’re a fool. You couldn’t be faithful if you tried.’

‘Perhaps.’ A coolness edged his voice. ‘But I haven’t – and won’t – sleep with a friend of Olivia’s.’

‘Spoilsport!’ She put a teasing note into her voice to try and lighten the mood. ‘Never mind, I’m happy to make do with Clive again for tonight.’

‘Clive?’

‘My chauffeur. Livvy hasn’t mentioned him?’

‘No.’ He sipped his coffee. ‘So how many men do you have running after you now, Audrey?’

‘Enough,’ she replied, ‘but that doesn’t stop me missing you.
